NOT a mellow yellow diver from Zodiac
by: mikiehorn    On: 2007-01-03

Zodiacs only automatic mechanical diver model has made a big splash on the watch collectors want list. This is a big, bold colorful professional dive watch that turns heads and brings out the credit cards of watch collectors everywhere. Lets take a tour of this unusual and most wanted dive watch.

CASE

The 45mm 316L stainless steel case has a distinctive oblong crown guard at the 4 0clock position. A nice thickness and heft (over 215 gr) let you know this beauty is hanging on your wrist. Screw down crown and sapphire crystal frame an electric yellow red numeraled watch dial. Date at 4 oclock is readable without a magnifier. The dark blue unidirectional bezel neatly compliments the package. The yellow dial is fan fold embossed between the one and three oclock position. Solid engraved stainless steel back finishes the case with professional diver class water resistance.

BRACELET

Again 316L solid endlink heavy stainless steel multi-link bracelet compliments the heavy watch head and provides good balance and a micro-adjustment perfect fit for most owners. Foldover safety clasp, with wet suit extension deployment carry on the theme of a working dive watch.

MOVEMENT

Zodiac sent a few ripples through the American watch community as it switched to the Claro-Semag Swiss Made automatic watch movement. As the Swatch Group (owner of the ETA movement) started to ration its high demand ETA 2824-2 25 jewel automatic movement to "in-house" brands - Zodiac found a winner in the CL888 - a high quality time keeper better known in Europe - but sure to find its way to our shores in Swiss Made and Swiss Movement automatic watches.

SUMMARY

Zodiac has returned to the auto movement dive watch market - which it dominated some years ago with the Oceanaire - also found in more conservative black dial and in Orange dial which is available only in a rubber strap model. The thick sapphire crystal, beautiful bracelet and striking color combination scream DRESS DIVER. Whenever I can I find a way to wear this super dive watch over cuffed long sleeved dress shirts. So, who should buy it? Small wristed folks used to light and thin quartz watches might want to look elsewhere. Ladies- on the other hand - who crave a BIG yellow fashion statement on the wrist - may want to hit the gym to ignore the weight and wear this beauty as a fashion statement...
