What's in a name?     On: 2007-09-25

So why does Amazon feature this watch as one of their gold box specials at a fraction of its alleged retail value? Remarkably its the heaviest watch Ive ever owned, surprising for a device that simply keeps time and marks the date. Thin and graceful it isnt, though it does have diamond inserts in the eight places where there arent numbers. The main difference from the pictured watch is the gold numbers of the actual watch, making it harder to read than the one in Amazons picture. Also, the gold-framed square area tends to infringe on the date number. Despite the limited functions and the size and weight of the piece, its not as easy to read as my Timex.

The fairly massive band accounts for much of the watchs weight. And even at its "shorter" length, its way too big for my wrist, sliding off my hand with no problem at all.

Its made in Japan, and comes in a fairly large cushioned leather box (what possible use let alone space could there be for these ostentatious packages?). Theres a warranty but no instructions (forget about making the band fit without paying a jeweler to size it to your wrist).

Lessons learned: Dont take retail prices seriously with watches (walk the streets of Manhattan for a couple of hours and just try to keep track of the times you get hustled by sellers with $10 Rolexes). Also, limit yourself to watches that have leather, rubber, or expansion bands. These chain-metal glasps are simply a pain in the neck--in fact, I suspect theyre cheaper to make. Id return this one, but for the price I can afford to keep it just to satisfy my curiosity. Im going to take it apart to see what the Japanese threw inside to make it weigh a pound. Probably some old Betamax parts.

On the other hand, I kept my last two impractical watches from Amazon simply because they were "bargains." I cant afford another bargain, however apparently outrageous the mark-down. This one goes back.
Decent watch to buy     On: 2006-11-23

I bought this as a gift for my dad. Its a nice decent gift, the only problem was the dial, dial of this watch is quite bigger than it appears on screen. Except this one problem...nice one for who like bit bigger dial
