This was my first watch with an automatic movement, and I picked the Invicta 8929 after reading so many great reviews about its famous sibling - the silver/black 8926. Figuring that the basic design and internals were the same, I choose this gold/black model for its dress watch appeal. One downside is that it draws too much attention as it screams "filthy rich"! Oh well, the joke is on those who cant believe that this gorgeous timepiece costs only about $100 (discountwatchstore.com will price match and has a great selection). Shouldnt things be judged on their own merit instead of price? And isnt the goal of true capitalism to profit by producing high quality products at a low price for the discerning consumer?
The watch build is superb and is reflected in a hands-on inspection. The band, crown, face and bezel, see-thru back, and finish all show real quality. Only the smooth sweep of the second hand is slightly marred by a subtle jerkiness that most will not notice, but purists will see especially side-by-side with a Rolex (costing 100 times more, though).
This watch had been non-functional for almost 2 years after I had abused it by wearing it on my right wrist while playing many hard hitting games of tennis - something that I strongly discourage anyone do with an automatic watch. While preparing it recently for shipment to a repair center, I accidently dropped it and it started running again! sometimes two wrongs do make a right... On: 2007-06-26

Certainly if you buy this Invicta, you like Rolex type styling. I do! But a Rolex is a pricey option. Regardless, the Invicta is a great watch on its own merits and it provides a very good value for the dollar. This is my second Invicta (Ive got the Stainless, black face model too). Both have provided excellent service and keep reasonable time. Its fun to look at the movement once in awhile through the glass back, plus, you can tell if it floods (which hasnt occurred). Only a couple of minor negatives. One is that even though the watch band has been improved on this generation Invicta, the clasp is still on the thin side. It functions perfectly, but if it were thicker, it would improve the perceived quality. Also, I dont personally care for the flying wings on the short side of the second hand (they dont always show up in the pictures of the watch face so buyers beware). Otherwise, the Invicta is a great watch and I will buy from Invicta again. I cant vouch for the water proof characteristics at depth for the Invicta. When I dive, its with a Casio G-Shock. However, Ive swam with the Invicta many times and as long as the crown is properly screwed down, its fine. Bottom line - buy it.
