Swan Song For Zodiac Mechanical Movement Watches     On: 2007-09-03

The good: This is a great looking watch. It is big and bulky, just the way a mechanical chronograph should be. The case is thick because it has a separate chronograph movement attached to a traditional automatic mechanical movement, totaling 51 jewels. The movement alone is worth the price. The dial is unique and really stands out with the different sized numbers. The watchband has a nicely operating deployment buckle. It is also unique in that the band between the lugs is padded to extend out further than normal and has little knobs ont he inside to keep the watch from sliding back and forth, all while being very comfortable to wear. Its a real looker, and the mechanical movement can be repaired for a lifetime of use. This watch originally retailed for $1,895.00 so its a real deal and well worth the closeout price.

The bad: Zodiac was purchased by Fossil, and they have recently downgraded the quality of Zodiac with what I call throw away watches...you wear them until the quartz movement stops, then trash them as they arent worth fixing. Some of that philosophy is evident in the ZO2005 Calame Sport Chronograph. The movement and dial are high end, but the case and especially the telemeter bezel (surrounding the face)are incredibly soft metal and easily dented and scratched. So be careful with this watch because the case will not stand up to heavy or every day use. Its a special watch to wear out, not while fishing or working on your car.
