Before you plunk down serious money for a such a unique watch, you should do a little homework and check out a gallery of such watches [...] If you sold me a watch with just twelve hours on the dial, Id feel cheated. "Hey! Wheres the rest of the day?" Some of the choices to make when buying a watch: (1)Analog or digital - People dont look at a watch to see what time it is. They look to see what time it isnt. It isnt time to get up yet or go to work yet or I still have time until dinner. Prove it to yourself by seeing someone glance at their watch and then ask them the time. They will look again more closely. A digital watch requires you to study, decode, decipher. The same thing is true for gauges on the dashboard of a car. (2)If the above choice was for analog then the next choice has to be made for disply, as in color of dial, how many hands, features like 24 hour, alarm, stopwatch, day, date, time zones and moon phase. Some watches with a particular use in mind such as a bright orange or yellow dial as a diving watch because its more visible under water. A flat black dial with glowing numbers is a pilots watch because of night vision issues. There are some horrible examples of color designs out there. Ive seen white numbers on a white dial or shiny, silver numbers on a prismatic background where you have to roll you wrist to catch the light in just the right way to read the time. There are roman numeral, arabic numberals, chinese numerals, artsy designs that are distorted and even a Movado watch with no numbers at all. In the case of 24 hour watches, there is the choice of twelve at the top or twenty-four. There is a feature called GMT where there is a 12 hour hand and a 24 hour hand. Its very popular but I dont care for it. Think of asking for the time and two people answer at the same time in two different languages. Its not a problem, once you get used to it. Seán Glen 24-hour wristwatch This is an automatic mechanical watch thats pretty ordinary in appearance and performance. Its uniqueness is that it tells time on a 24-hour (not 12-hour) basis. So if thats what youre looking for (a conversation piece; hope you can get used to reading time this way), here it is. Nice workmanship and strap. Mine arrived with the hour and minute hands out of synch with each other -- unforgivable factory screwup, IMHO. However, the USA repair place (in Dallas) fixed the problem in only two weeks elapsed, and the watch has been OK ever since. Unusually, the strap pins are intentionally bent (rather crudely - as if using two pair of pliers) to match the curvature of the watch. This is an oddity, but not really a problem; just one for the Watch Geeks Book of Records (like the watch from (manufacturer withheld) having two "IX" hours instead of IX and XI - email me and Ill send you a jpg image - good for a laugh ([...]). |
