Wenger Pilot GMT     On: 2005-09-27

This very affordable timepiece is perfect for knockaround every-day use. It has an understated brush finish on the case and a high-polish bezel and crown. The back is screw-in and high-polish. The lugs have a nice curve which follows the wrist. The overall style is classic "Pilot" or "Military". Large Arabic numerals at hour positions, large hour and minute hand, red sweep second hand, and "pointer" style GMT hand. The GMT register (1-24 hour) is under the crystal and not moveable. The leather band is padded but fairly stiff and does take some "break-in". Small extensions or "wings" under the end of each strap element overlay the back for comfort when wearing. If you do not like these, they are easily removed with a small scissor. The luminous coating on numerals and hands is Wengers proprietary "Super Luminova"(R) which seems to take longer to "charge" than other watches in my collection. There is a small problem setting GMT time, the instructions state "1) Begin by setting the regular time ... 2)...then with crown in position 2 rotate clockwise to set second time zone..." The GMT hand does not have a "detent" so it can be set between hour marks to any degree position on the 24 hour bezel. I found that I could only get the GMT hand to "track" properly using this procedure: 1) With crown in position 3, set minute hand 5 or 10 minutes before the hour. 2) With crown in position 2, set GMT hand precisely on GMT hour. 3) With crown in position 3, advance minute hand to top of the hour. There seems to be some driveline "lash" in the GMT hand which is taken up by setting the minute hand prior to the hour and then advancing it to "take up the slack". Fit and finish is very good. If you are not a collector, this quartz movement watch is the functional equivalent of very similar mechanicals which run between $400 and $800.
