Great watch, but...     On: 2004-04-24

Ive worn this watch for 3 months now and Ive learned to like it, although it could use some improvements.

I should say right off that Im a Navy pilot. I fly the A-6E Intruder on reconnaissance missions so Im probably an ideal candidate for the "Fighter Command" watch.

It works great at altitude, but Ive noticed in steep dives the second hand seems to stutter. I know I should be watching where Im aiming the aircraft, but NOTHING is more important to me than keeping time during "high G" maneuvers.

Ive begun to notice the alarm (which is a corny melody similar to Yankee Doodle) starts to lose pitch under low pressure conditions (generally above 36,000 feet).

I experienced further disappointment when I fastened the watch to a titanium fin within the starboard intake. A la Timex (takes a licking and keeps on ticking), I wanted to see how it handles the adverse conditions of a military jet engine.

To my surprise it performed beautifully; on the first two attempts, that is. On the third attempt, I brought the rpms over 10,000 and I noticed an orange glow emanating from the lining of the engine casing. After investigating, I found a thin layer of gold had melted off the watch and accumulated in the intake. I was shocked at first, but soon realized that I was now the only pilot in the service with a gold plated aircraft. I love it!

All in all, its a great watch. I would guess that few buyers of this fine museum piece would put it through the actual rigors of flight, but heck, it is called the "Fighter Command" watch.
