Better in real life.     On: 2006-11-22

Ive owned this watch about 2 years now. Its big, its heavy, and its pure quality. I own several great watches, but this one gets the most wrist time. I just keep coming back to it. Its hard to explain, Japanese watches are fine, and perfectly good at what they do, but they just dont have that precision "feel" that this watch has. You literally feel like youre strapping on a machine instead of just jewelry. If I had any complaint it would be the bezel. Its well made, its just that it counts up, but with the chronograph function, you can do that anyway. I would prefer that it counted down. The movement, while only quartz, is not cheap, 27 jewels, and fully serviceable, not a throwaway. A very nice feature of this movement is that you can adjust the hour and date without affecting the minutes or seconds. Great for different timezones or daylight savings time. The watch is also very easy to read in the dark with the hands and numbers glowing brightly at first and then dimming at about the rate my eyes need to adjust to the dark. The faint, but readable glow then lasts pretty much all night.
When I first saw this watch in real life, I was like "Man, its a bit much, almost too Mack Bolan." But after I put it on, I got this grin, you know the kind, it just wouldnt go away. No other timepiece has had that affect.
The Look & Feel of PURE Quality

I am relatively new to Chase-Durer, and while they are relatively new to the watch manufacturing world, I would imagine they will be around for quite some time. I was looking for that new watch I wanted amongst the thousands of models available today when I accidentally came upon the Chase-Durer name, and had a quick look. All I can say is: WOW.

I am drawn to large watches in particular, and while Chase-Durer doesnt make anything that rivals my Suunto models, they are solid and make their presence known by the sheer force of their incredible design. Chase-Durer manufactures a whole batch of really, really cool looking Pilot watches (one of the best being the Trident which had been sold out at last check) but I was drawn to their Special Forces design. In particular, the Underwater Demolition Team (UDT) 1000 Black Steel model was everything I was hoping for -- and more. Although you can find very similar (some would say rip-offs) styles available all over the place for prices that are next to nothing, it doesnt take but a quick glance up close to the UDT to know beyond a doubt that this is one VERY WELL crafted timepiece. Just the weight alone proves this. I have many watches as a collector, and this is easily one of the heaviest watches I have personally ever worn (even heavier than the Suunto GPS Wrist Monster). I needed one link removed to fit my wrist, but other than that one fix out of the box, this watch really IS cool. Ever wondered what an old-fashioned stopwatch worked like? This watch has one. Including a Tachymetre, and I must admit I still am rather clueless as to how to work it, but I AM learning.

Water resistant to 1000 feet, this timepiece can definitely take a quick plunge in tne city pool, or a deep dive in Puget Sound, Washington. Give it a shot. The buttons are all screw-down which helps to ensure the water resistance, but I DO have some advice for you: If you manage to over-screw the top and bottom buttons, you may encounter some difficulty in getting them un-screwed. Try to remember NOT to tighten them too much, I know I will from now on.

Above and beyond everything that makes this watch a great buy, I have one more thing to mention: be prepared to receive some attention. This watch just screams: LOOK AT ME. I didnt think so at first -- that is until I kept getting comments from pure strangers regarding how neat my watch looked. Once again, you COULD buy a cheap knock-off that from a distance may LOOK similar, but upon close inspection, just doesnt measure up, or you SHOULD spend a little extra for that one timepiece that not only looks good, but will give you YEARS of wear -- maybe decades. If you are on the fence on this one, let me push you over to the side of purchase. Chase-Durer IS the look & feel of pure quality.
