Wonderfully cheap retro mod watch     On: 2004-11-03

When I first came upon the Casio - FS042M I knew I had to have it. I had been looking at much higher priced watches that had the same retro-ugly appeal, but for sixteen bucks, this watch satisfied my need for timekeeping nostalgia.

The baby blue strap shimmers, the analog watch face has clean and simple dots, and the metal casing gives the watch a classier look.

But remember, this is a sub-20 dollar watch. The buttons feel very flimsy, and the analog face is not perfectly butted up to the glass, making it look rather cheap. I would have also liked the strap clasp to be made of metal; it is instead made of white plastic.

All in all, for the price, this watch is a perfect stylish wrist adornation.
Cute TimeTelling Ugly Duckling     On: 2004-10-14

Having a weak spot for ugly 1960s and 1970s industrial design items, it was love at first sight with this FS042M (dont you just love a model number like that?..)
Cheap plastic looks but with all the functionality required to do its job. Whats year it was manufactured anyway?
The pale blue face and wrist band remind me of a cold rainy autumn day on which theres just enough light pouring down to tell the time from the miniature dial and hands.
And at a push of my fingertips, underneath that pale blue skin the electrons will flow to tell me the date or make the stopwatch run.
I ordered it on October 14, 2004 and living in the Netherlands, I am curious how much time it will take before it arrives. And... if I have to pay import taxes here.
It arrived on October 20, marked as "precision instrument" for customs, which made it pass thru without having to pay taxes. Very smart, thanks. Because for a watch marked as "watch" I always have to pay taxes. The love at first site is still there, the strap has a lovely velvet-like feel and the watch is very lightweight. I almost forget Im wearing it. But the watch has some drawbacks; 1. the buttons are wobbly. Theyre not always in line with the case since they tend to pivot on the pins that pass on the pushing motion into the watch. 2. looking at the hands under an angle, you see the edges of dial under the face glass.
