Very pleased with the the Timex watch as well as the it being shipped in a timely manner without having to pay the big bucks.
Great Watch for the Money     On: 2007-02-22

I bought this in early November because I wanted a sweep second hand and a digital stopwatch and this seemed to fill the bill. I wore it for 3 months during which it hardly lost 5 seconds based on the Naval Observatory web site. I like its functionality so much that I bought another with a black face and gray digital panel (45201). It was totally a cosmetic issue. Now I have a spare. Two great watches for less than $90. Whats not to like?
solution to freezing problem     On: 2006-05-04

I got one of these watches in mid-February. I liked it quite well--the main deficiency I saw in the design was that the digital display area is somewhat obscured by the minute hand when the time is half past the hour. (Also, the instructions are not very clearly written, but I managed to figure out how to operate it nevertheless.)

Then, a few weeks later, all the buttons suddenly became inoperable while I was trying to set something, and so I was essentially left with an analogue watch. I took it back to the store and got a replacement. A few weeks later, the same thing happened with the replacement watch--all the buttons became inoperable.

I had planned to take this second watch back to get a refund and then buy a different brand of watch. Before I got around to doing this, however, I started fiddling with the watch again after it had been inoperable for several days. By chance, I pushed all four buttons at once. This made the watch beep, and then voila--I could once more use the buttons. Unfortunately, pushing all four buttons at once also resets the watch, so I had to manually reset the time and date.

Im hoping that since the four-button reset is an undocumented feature, that perhaps the button-freeze problem is also really a feature--something akin to the button-disabling function on cell phones that prevents you from inadvertently calling your mother while youre carrying the phone around in your pocket--and that the watch didnt malfunction but that I somehow inadvertently triggered this function. And Im hoping furthermore that there is also some undocumented unfreeze button combination short of completely resetting the watch. But even if this isnt the case, at this point, I am leaning toward keeping the watch--at least if it doesnt freeze up often and if I can always get it to work again when it does.
The Good and The Bad     On: 2005-03-24

I have had three of these watches in the last 6 years. They come on sale at the kmart near my house for 20 dollars. First off, it should be said that I am pretty rough with my watches. I have had both experiences as described by other reviewers. The first one I bought lasted for a while and took quite a beating. The second one, the battery died very quickly (less than 2 months) and then when i treied to replace the battery (a very hard thing to do on this watch), I ended up breaking it beyond repair. The third one still works, but the little metal rod that holds the strap onto the watch will not stay in place. I came here to see how much they are going for now, but all i really need is that little metal thing that holds the strap to the watch. This third watch has been functioning fine for about a year.

Hope that helps.
The Expedition is dependable, attractive, and affordable

Timex makes great watches. I have had this watch for about five years (it was a replacement for the Timex I had for the ten years previously), and I have always been able to count on it. Reliability is an important and often underemphasized aspect of watch quality. This watch has been dropped, stepped on, kicked, knocked on walls, hit with cans of soup, showered with, swam with, washed, and chewed on by dogs, but not only have I not destroyed it, I havent even been able to successfully scratch it. I may have been either incredibly lucky or the watch gods may be favoring me, but this is the experience I have had with all three timex watches I have owned. On top of that the watch is also very attractive and quite inexpensive for it. The timepiece itself runs very well and I never need to adjust the time except when the watch outlasts another battery. The analog clock is clear and precise, easy to read at night. The digital section has all the standards availale on Timex: 2 Times, Date, Alarm, Timer and Chronometer. The Indiglo light is so much better than the old microscopic light bulb watches used to have to see in the dark with. There is no better watch for this amount of money.
classy, sturdy, long lasting

Just like the commercials in the 1970s - "Takes a lickin and keeps on tickin." I dont care for the tiny watch faces typically available on "ladies" watches, but I dont want to wear a watch that looks too masculine, either. I like a trade-off between easy-to-use, functional, yet not "butch," either.

The Indiglo™ feature that lights up the watch in low-light is a godsend. I use it all the time. If I wake up in the middle of the night for any reason, I always take a glance at my watch before I go back to sleep. The light is strong enough to light up the face of the watch so it can be read, but not so strong its blinding. Non-Indiglo™ watches that "light up" have one dim light to the side, that really only lights up half the watch dial. With the Timex Expedition ©, you cant tell where the light is coming from - the whole watch face just glows!

I keep the digital window with the current date. Its nice to have an analog watch in this digital world - and the quartz movement ensures that the time is precise. Probably because of my excessive use of the Indiglo™ feature, I have to get the battery changed about once very 18 months.

As much as I love this watch (I wear it everywhere except in the shower), it loses one star for the following:

The need for a battery becomes obvious when you are suddenly 5 hours off on the analog dial - I have never seen a warning like "Batt. Lo" in the digital window in the past 4 times Ive had to change the battery - its usually the revelation that the second hand has stopped moving that alerts me to the almost dead battery.

The buttons are very hard to depress. Dont get me wrong - I dont want buttons getting pressed by accident, but the hard metal buttons are so small, it literally hurts to activate them, especially when you have to do a 2-button combo. Buttons in their next model could be a bit bigger in circumfrence and perhaps slightly flush with their bezels to make them less likely to be depressed by accident, yet much easier to press with a fingertip without the need of arms like Vishnu!

The digital features are the antithesis of intuitive. You need to carry a manual around with you if youre going to be fiddling with the digital settings. I keep it on the date function, but thats not the default, so everytime I get the battery changed, I have to go to the Timex Web site to look up the instructions again, otherwise I fiddle for hours. I had a Casio full digital back in 1982 that was more intuitive to use than this gizmo.

Despite its shortcomings, I have really enjoyed this watch, which I have been wearing for over 5 years. The leather band is high-class and the silver bezel matches my skin tone better than the gold models. I have worn this watch while wearing jeans & mowing the lawn, as well as to job interviews where I am wearing a dress - it is neutral and not too bulky. The watch mechanism is thin enough to not have that "Im gonna bust your head open with my James Bond utility watch" look, yet it also looks like a watch - not just a "cute" bracelet.

Even though I wear it everywhere all the time, the scratches are minimal. I have banged the glass face on a million objects, scratched it on various surfaces, etc., but you have to hold the watch at a skewed angle to see any of the scratches. Still takes a licking and keeps on ticking!
Best Watch I've Ever Had!     On: 2004-02-17

I have had my Expidition for maybe 2 years now. I have not had any problems except for scratching the glass face against a brick wall, but that is my own fault. I am pretty tough on my watches, I never take it off. I highly recomend the Expidition.
Stopped Working     On: 2003-10-19

I have to agree 100% with Jim Socal from CA, USAs review. Ive had this watch for less than 2 months & ALL the buttons have stopped working. So as of now the ONLY thing that is STILL working is the hands. I am very disappointed in Timex for building this obviously substandard piece of crap ( or at least allowing their name to be put on it. ). My last watch was a Timex & it lasted for over 10 years & several motorcycle accidents! And BTW-- This new watch was never even bumped before it suddenly stopped working! IF you still want to buy this watch I hope you have better luck than Jim & I had.
Might work, if you can figure out how; but mine didn't     On: 2003-09-18

I bought this watch based on Timexs (formerly, at least) good name. (Do you know it is now made in Thailand or somewhere like that?) First of all, the instructions were ludicrous to try and figure out how to set the alarm, use the Timer, and other features. I am NOT one of those guys who cant program his VCR. In fact, I can build web sites and use any software program you give me. The fact is, these instructions arent even RIGHT! Then, by trial and error (forget the instructions) I finally got the time and alarm set and working. Then, the next day, the thing just froze on the -2nd time zone- screen, and I could not get it to go back to any other screen! Needless to say I returned it, and will NOT buy another TImex, ever! Too bad, they were once a great watch company! At least they should get an American who speaks English to write their instructions! I bought a Casio, the instructions were EASY to follow, and it works just fine, thank you!
Great Watch, Great Price... Get One Before They're All Gone
by: Anonymous    On: 2003-07-27

I have been through a few watches in my life. I am fairly rough on them – banging against objects and scratching them up. Years ago, I swore by Seiko until I noticed the batteries were difficult to replace. These days, Timex is all I will buy – great price, superior accuracy and you can find the batteries at virtually any department store (like Target.) After ordering online, I received this item a few days ago in excellent condition via UPS. I had it programmed and set in a matter of minutes. After strapping to my wrist, it instantly felt like I had been wearing it for years. It has a professional look without the professional price. Moreover, all the features I need. I would highly recommend this watch to anyone. Thanks Target and Timex!
